A.D. (Robbie) Robertson of Ketchikan, a member of the University of Alaska's Board of Regents from 1968-1975, died of cancer in Ketchikan General Hospital on November 30th, 1975 at the age of 65.

Robertson, in his first year of his second eight-year term on the Board of Regents, had been ill for some time but managed to remain active. At the time of his death he was chairman of the Board of the First National Bank of Ketchikan, and he and his wife Maxine had just moved into a house they had built themselves in Ketchikan.

Born in Perthshire, Scotland, he came to Ketchikan in 1940. In 1946 he joined the First National Bank of Ketchikan. When he retired, he was the bank's executive vice president.

“The University has lost a most devoted regent and friend, and Alaska will long remember this distinguished man who gave so freely of his time and wisdom to help guide education at all levels for over two decades,” said Dr. Robert W. Hiatt, president of the University of Alaska.

“Alan Robertson's deep feeling of public responsibility as a citizen, his unusually fine sense of humor, and his dedication to the education of all made him a standout among Alaskans. He was admired by all who knew him, yet none could match him. His presence at meetings of the Board of Regents will truly be missed by all,” said Brian Brundin, president of the Board of Regents and a longtime friend of Robertson.

“Robbie's death brings a feeling of great personal loss for members of the Board of Regents. As the bard of the board he always brought us sunshine and reminded us that good humor can reduce any problem to manageable size.

In addition to his wife, Robertson is survived by a son, Ian, of Kirkland, Washington, and a daughter, Heather, of Ketchikan.

He had been president of the Association of Alaska School Boards and a member of the Alaska Board of Education and Ketchikan School Board. He was a former president of the Alaska Bankers Association.

A 1966 graduate of the University of Washington's Pacific Coast Banking School, he later became a member of the school's board of directors.

Robertson was buried in Ketchikan's Bayview Cemetery.
