Dr. Arthur Schaible was a prominent interior Alaska surgeon who came to the state in 1938 to head the Alaska Native Health Services Hospital at Tanana. In 1941, he moved to Fairbanks and remained associated with the Fairbanks Clinic until his retirement in 1971. He had a long association with the University of Alaska, including serving on the Board of Regents from 1961 until 1969.
Schaible is a graduate of Valparaiso University and had a master's degree from Northwestern University where he had also received his M.D. degree. He joined the Fairbanks Medical and Surgical Clinic in 1941. He held many important territorial and state appointments, and was active in the organization of the Alaska Territory Medical Association.
He married Druska Carr, head of the university department of biological sciences, Dec. 23, 1949, in Seattle. She died in the Lathrop Building fire in 1957.
After reading about the fire in the New York Times, Grace Berg wrote a note of sympathy to her old friend. This exchange, over time, developed into an even closer friendship. On Christmas Day, 1958, they were married in the 5th Avenue Presbyterian Church in New York City. Grace Berg Schaible is the first woman in Alaska to be appointed attorney general. Arthur Schaible died January, 1980.
