Hess Recreation Center (UAF)
Hess Recreation Center
Fairbanks Campus
1866 Yukon Drive
Description: The Harriet and Luther Hess Recreation Center opened in 1970, in the Moore-Bartlett-Skarland residence hall complex, which was completed in 1969. It was originally designed as a dining hall and called the Harriet and Luther Hess Dining Commons. In 1984, Alaska raised the legal drinking age from 19 to 21 and the university made plans to develop Hess Commons into a social hall with non-alcohol related activities. It currently serves as a meeting area for students.
In 2002, the newly remodeled Hess Rec Center opened with heavy usage for meetings, social events, conferences and training sessions. Student Services bought new furniture at a cost of more than $300,000 for the center.
