Governor Praises Bunnell
This news account was about the dedication of the Bunnell Building that appeared in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner on May 23, 1960.
Governor William A. Egan, tracing the history of the University of Alaska, paid tribute
to its contributions to the state in his address at the dedication of the Bunnell
Building yesterday.
The governor spoke at the formal ceremony marking the opening of the university's
modern new campus structure.
"This institution has served well the cultural and educational needs of a pioneer
and growing state. Its leaders have shown wisdom and judgment in well planned expansion
to keep pace with Alaska's growth. I have every confidence this wise course will prevail
in the future."
Governor Egan paid tribute to "Judge" Bunnell, the first president of the university,
who guided the institution for many years.
"If Doctor Bunnell had not shown the ability to get a dollar's worth, or more, from
every dollar available, the university might have died in its infancy," the governor
said. The governor retraced the growth of the university down through the years, and
recounted the many deeds of Doctor Bunnell.
