The University of Alaska Board of Regents will meet on the Anchorage campus for a two-day meeting June 7 and 8. The June meeting traditionally has a substantial agenda, as this is the final opportunity to get projects in front of the regents before fiscal year-end. Agenda topics include acceptance of FY13 operating and capital budgets, approval of FY14 budget guidelines, and approval of bylaw amendments.

The facilities and land management committee will review multiple capital projects, including the Mat-Su Valley Center for Arts & Learning, UAA and UAF engineering buildings, upgrades to electrical systems and dining services on the UAF campus. The board will also hear updates on the UAA sports arena, UAF life sciences building, and deferred maintenance spending reports from throughout the system.

The board will have an opportunity to tour the UAA Health Sciences Building, listen to a presentation on the new Fisheries Seafood Maritime Initiative, and hear from the host campus, UAA.

On Wednesday, June 6 regents will meet with members of the Alaska State Board of Education. It will be the first time in a decade that the two boards have held a joint meeting. They will discuss the direction of education in Alaska and how to work more effectively together to address significant education issues impacting Alaska students. That evening the current and past regents and trustees of the University of Alaska Foundation will gather for a joint reception.

Board members will accept public testimony at 10 a.m. Thursday and again at 9 a.m. Friday.

The meeting starts at 9 a.m. Thursday in Room 107 of the Lee Gorsuch Commons at the University of Alaska Anchorage campus and continues at 8 a.m. Friday.

University of Alaska President Pat Gamble has announced that Nancy Spink has been selected as the new Chief Risk Officer and will begin her assignment June 20, 2012.

Spink joins UA from the University of Idaho where she was the Risk Management Officer. She will lead UA’s efforts to create and maintain a university-wide risk management program that utilizes disciplines such as loss prevention, risk financing, claims management and risk information systems.

“The University of Alaska has been undergoing a philosophical shift in how we manage risk and we are delighted to have someone of Nancy’s caliber to be part of the commitment to developing the UA Enterprise Risk Management (ERM) doctrine and strategy, “ said Gamble.

Spink will be responsible for and coordinate the development and implementation of system wide programs and standards including enterprise risk management, health, safety, and environmental management, claims management, emergency management, and insurance in accordance with federal and state statutes and regulations, procedures and responsible risk management practices.

"ERM is a means of providing enhanced service to the university community. Rather than saying "no" to an activity, the ERM process provides a means to achieve the objectives with controlled activities. ERM is a way of providing the "wide angle view" for common solutions," said Spink.

During her 30 years in insurance and risk management she has specialized in innovative and effective strategies to manage risk. Nancy has demonstrated ability to analyze client needs and provide risk solutions, with her last nine years working specifically in higher education. In addition to her extensive experience she holds a B.A. in English with an Associate in Risk Management (ARM) designation.
