The University of Alaska Board of Regents will consider several new academic programs and construction projects during a two-day meeting in Soldotna Thursday and Friday.

The Kenai River Campus in Soldotna is part of Kenai Peninsula College, which also includes Kachemak Bay Campus in Homer and extension sites in Anchorage and Seward.

Academic programs up for approval include a Bachelor of Arts in Special Education at the University of Alaska Southeast; a Master of Arts in Teaching in Special Education, also at UAS; and an Associate of Applied Science in Medical Diagnostic Sonography at the University of Alaska Anchorage.

Board members will hear public testimony at 10 a.m. Thursday and 9 a.m. Friday; attend a groundbreaking at 5 p.m. for the Career & Technical Education Center and student housing at the campus; and attend a plaque unveiling at 5:20 p.m. in the Brockel Building.

This will be the first meeting for Regent Dale Anderson of Juneau. Gov. Sean Parnell appointed Anderson to the post following the recent resignation of Bob Martin Jr., also of Juneau, due to health reasons.

In addition to the academic programs, the board is slated to consider schematic design approval for the Valley Center for Arts and Learning at Mat-Su College in Palmer. The voter-approved project includes a music classroom, drama lab and »theater for lectures, conferences and public events. Schematic design approval allows the campus to move ahead with bid documents and to select a contractor.

The agenda also includes a resolution of appreciation for former Regent Martin and a presentation on mining workforce projections.
