Release date: 8/30/73

FAIRBANKS- -Some 250 Fairbanksans turned out here Wednesday evening to meet Dr. Robert W. Hiatt, new president of the University of Alaska, and Mrs. Hiatt.

The public reception--held at the Traveler's Inn--was sponsored by the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce.

The Hiatts were joined in the receiving line by Sen. and Mrs. Mike Gravel, Dr. and Mrs. Hugh B. Fate Jr., Mrs. Frank Chapados, wife of the president of the Fairbanks Chamber of Commerce, and Mrs. Vide Bartlett.

Fate and Mrs. Bartlett, both of Fairbanks, are members of the university's Board of Regents.

Dr. Hiatt, fifth president of the University of Alaska, succeeded Dr. William P. Wood who retired on June 30 of this year.

He came to the university from Tokyo where since 1970 he had served as consular officer and counselor for scientific affairs in the U.S. diplomatic service.

Dr. Hiatt retired from the University of Hawaii in 1969 after 26 years at that institution during which he served as teacher and administrator. He was acting president of that university from 1968-69.
