UA Interim President Pat Pitney names Dr. Karen Carey as UAS Chancellor
University of Alaska Interim President Pat Pitney announced today that she has appointed Interim Chancellor Karen Carey as permanent chancellor for the University of Alaska Southeast. Carey has served as the UAS interim chancellor since July, succeeding former Chancellor Rick Caulfield who retired in June.
President Pitney announced Carey’s permanent appointment Wednesday afternoon during a virtual town hall with UAS staff, faculty, students and community members.
“I’ve worked with Karen for several months now and know that she is the right choice to lead UAS,” Pitney said.
Before accepting the position as interim chancellor, Carey served as UAS provost. She joined the University of Alaska Southeast as provost in 2016. Carey earned her Ph.D. in School Psychology from University of Cincinnati, and came to UAS from the California State University Channel Islands, in Ventura, California where she served as the Dean of Arts & Sciences. In that role she was responsible for strategic planning and student learning as well as managing academic programs with more than 200 faculty.
Carey expressed her gratitude for the opportunity to continue serving the University of Alaska Southeast.
“I am thrilled to have been asked to serve as the Chancellor at the University of Alaska Southeast,” Carey said. “UAS is a great University. We have fantastic students, staff, and faculty and I look forward to continuing to work closely with them and our communities.”
Carey’s appointment as permanent chancellor is effective immediately.
