University of Alaska Board of Regents to meet in Anchorage to discuss budget and tuition

The Board of Regents will meet Wednesday, Nov. 4, at 8 a.m., at the University of Alaska Anchorage in the Lee Gorsuch Commons on the Anchorage campus. Public testimony will be held between 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. in room 107 following the President’s and Governance reports.

The regents will be reviewing proposed FY17 operating and capital budgets and a recommendation to increase tuition by nine percent for the 2017 academic year. The state’s continued fiscal situation compels the university to consider all options to increase revenue as UA also works to reduce cost. The tuition increase is projected to generate $11 million in revenue.

If approved by the regents, UA will request a $26.7 million increase in its budget to cover new and increasing costs. However, according to the state Office of Management and Budget, even if the Board of Regents approves the budget request, the governor’s office may reduce the university’s base funding by $15.8 million. The university is preparing several budgets to meet different funding scenarios.

Regents also will hear from Dr. Dan White, University of Alaska Vice President for Academic Affairs, on the priorities and progress regarding theme five of Shaping Alaska's Future: Accountability to the People of Alaska.
