Job Family Criteria
Position Description
A Position Description is a general description of a job that includes work preformed,
the level of responsibility, and the skills, effort, and conditions required of the
work preformed.
Job Family
A Job Family is position grouping where jobs are categorized based on similar types
of work
Position Classification Code (PCLS Code)
The PCLS is used to identify if a position is exempt or non-exempt as defined by the
Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Some classification include an alternate PCLS that
reflects positions that may be classified as either exempt or non-exempt based on
specific duties.
Job Families are evaluated using the Hay Evaluation System which focuses on three universal factors when reviewing position classifications:
(1) Know-how,
(2) Problem Solving, and
(3) Accountability
Each Job Family has a career progression, linking each level within a Job Family to a corresponding salary grade.
Job Families support the university's competitive strategy by assisting with recruitment, retention, workforce planning, performance management, career ladders, and market analysis.
Job Families are used across the UA system to provide consistent position alignment, career ladder structure, and external salary survey benchmarks.
