RE: Update on United Academics CBA Negotiations

Dear UA Community,

Earlier today, our negotiating team was back at the bargaining table with the federal mediator and representatives from United Academics (UNAC). To date, both sides have made concessions, and with today’s session concluded, I am confident that an agreement is possible.

I understand that the long process of contract negotiation and mediation has been stressful for many, but I am encouraged with what has been accomplished so far. Although we were unable to accept UNAC’s latest package proposal as written, we worked today toward solving the remaining issues.

As we continue to negotiate through the confidential mediation process, we are listening intently to our faculty and union representatives, and doing our best to reach agreement.

I have heard speculation about possible disruptions due to the ongoing talks. I know this can be distracting and concerning, but let me assure you that the university is focused on meeting the needs of our students.

We are committed to a positive outcome and to ensuring that the needs of both the university and the faculty are addressed in the final contract.

The new academic year is just days away, and it’s important to celebrate this wonderful time of year and welcome back our faculty, staff, returning and new students to campus. Most importantly, as we start the fall semester, we are committed to creating a welcoming academic environment.

Sincerely,
Pat Pitney, President
University of Alaska
