It's official: UAF Community and Technical College

The UAF Community & Technical College, formerly the Tanana Valley Campus, officially changed its name July 1, 2010.

Over the past year, university leadership, faculty, staff, TVC and UAF students, high school students, alumni, members of TVC’s Community Advisory Council (CAC) and others gathered to discuss name and branding. As an outcome of these discussions, the new name was proposed to the University of Alaska Board of Regents at the June 3, 2010 meeting.

The objective was to come up with a name and brand that clearly states who they are and what they do—both internally and externally. This effort would clarify their mission, make clear their relationship within UAF and the UA system, and reflect the wealth of degrees and certificates offered to students. TVC already had a brand that had many positives. However, the brand also caused confusion. For example, many wondered if TVC classes were UAF classes. They routinely asked if their credits “would transfer to UAF” and prospective students living outside the Fairbanks area often thought TVC was a campus located in the village of Tanana.

The name UAF Community & Technical College received tremendous support from those involved in the various focus groups and from staff and faculty. It succinctly states what is offered, the explicit relationship to UAF, and stature as a college appropriate for a unit making up nearly 40 percent of UAF’s headcount and 22 percent of its student credit hours. Formal approval of this name was issued on by the Regents on June 3, 2010 and the name officially went into effect July 1, 2010.

Since opening its doors in 1974, UAF’s Community & Technical College has been a leader in academic preparation, lifelong learning and developing a quality local workforce.
