Mentor Biography
Kathy Chapoton
With a Master of Social Work degree from Louisiana State University in 1977, Kathy began her career as a School Social Worker in the New Orleans Public Schools. Moving to Alaska in 1979 and finding no such jobs available she migrated to the Alaska Children's Services Residential Treatment Group Home program and worked as a Family Therapist. Missing involvement in the field of education she attended Alaska Pacific University and secured a Teaching Certificate in 1983. She spent from 1983 to 2008 in the company of delightful five to eight year olds. Prior to retiring she taught for nine years at Midnight Sun Family Learning Center, a charter school she helped found. Because research indicates that "the teacher" is one of the most powerful influences on student achievement, I am excited about supporting teachers new to the profession in their quest to be effective. For those new teachers, I look forward to facilitating a smooth transition into the exhilarating and challenging world of the classroom and it's unique culture.
