The first year of teaching was in 4th grade at William Tyson Elementary in Anchorage, and the next five years were spent teaching 4th through 6th grades at Ladd Elementary School in Fairbanks. In addition to a K-8 teaching credential, DeAnn also has an endorsement in K-8 journalism. A focus within teaching is helping students feel successful in all the content areas.

"The best thing about being a teacher is being able to see the sparks of interest in students' eyes. I enjoy helping students overcome limitations such as writer's block and math anxiety. I also love to read and pass on this passion. Science, especially hands-on activities, helps students open their worlds and expand their minds. Social studies helps student make wonderful connections to the past and ties to the future. What I'm looking forward to about mentoring is to help inspire, guide, and assist teachers in being the best they can be. I understand that in teaching there is a lot of learning going on, and I'm looking forward to this exchange."
