Mentor Biography
Betty Walters
2007-2016 Betty received her B.A. in Elementary Education from Marywood College in Scranton, PA and her M.A. in Reading from the University of West Florida in Pensacola. Betty spent 7 years teaching Reading, Language Arts, ESL and Algebra to grades 9-12 in Kodiak High School. She spent 3 years as a Gifted Education teacher for grades 6-8 in Kodiak Middle School. Outside of Alaska, Betty taught several subjects and grades in NC, FL, NY, PA and even Naples, Italy. Betty has always enjoyed working with reluctant learners, alternative programs, diverse populations, and the students other staff might find difficult to teach. She enjoys making learning interesting, spending time in the community, at the workplace, and importantly with family.
"The best thing about being a teacher is sharing a part of students' successes regardless of the trials, the attempts, the challenges they must endure in the process. When the light goes on for one student and a skill is mastered, the celebration is only the beginning of continuous improvement for both the student and the teacher. I am looking forward to sharing some of what other professionals have shared with or given to me over the years: the skills, the techniques, the guidance, the joy of teaching even though it may be one of the hardest jobs in the world. Without the many mentors I had, I would be working in another field and not have touched the lives of so many children, teens and adults."
