Regents to discuss budget, Strategic Pathways, Title IX progress, and honor staff and departing chancellors during June meeting

The University of Alaska Board of Regents will continue discussion of the university’s FY18 budget, hear updates on Strategic Pathways and the Title IX Voluntary Resolution Agreement with the Office of Civil Rights and will recognize recipients of the Staff Make Students Count awards during its June 1-2 meeting in Fairbanks. The board will also be approving resolutions in honor of departing UAF and UAA chancellors. The meeting will take place in room 109 of the Butrovich Building on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus, and livestream will be available.

Budget discussions will include updates on the legislative process, acceptance of FY18 budget approval and distribution plans, approval of the Natural Resources Fund budget and preliminary development guidelines for the FY19 budget. Currently, the university’s FY18 budget is part of the Alaska Legislature’s operating budget conference committee deliberations. The Senate passed a budget funding UA at approximately $303 million unrestricted general funds (UGF), a reduction of $22 million or 7 percent from this year, not including fixed cost increases. The House passed a budget funding UA at $325 million UGF, the same as the current fiscal year and the same number proposed by the governor in his FY18 budget. The current year’s UGF budget of $325 million reflects a large reduction of $53 million that has already been absorbed by UA.

The Strategic Pathways discussion will be led by UA President Jim Johnsen, who will present updates on the first two phases and begin discussion of the initial options produced by team members in Phase 3 of the system-wide review and restructuring process. Review teams for all 22 academic and administrative areas have concluded work, although each of the three phases is at a different place in the process.

The regents will also consider resolutions in honor of retiring chancellors from UAF and UAA. UAF interim chancellor Dana Thomas and UAA chancellor Tom Case will retire from their respective universities in July.

A lunchtime presentation on June 1 will recap the the Week of the Arctic and Arctic Council activities held at the University of Alaska Fairbanks from May 12-14. The presentation highlights UAF’s role as a world leader in Arctic research.

The regents invite the community to a public gathering on Thursday, June 1 from 4:30-6:00 p.m. in the Globe Room, 215 Elvey Building on the University of Alaska Fairbanks campus. The informal gathering coincides with the first day of the full board meeting. The gathering is an opportunity for members of the university community and the public to ask questions and share comments with the regents in person.
