Energy conservation a priority during scheduled turbine cleaning

A solar powered sign reminds motorists on Thompson Dr. to conserve energy while UAF relies on more expensive power from GVEA during the routine maintenance of the university's powerplant.

UA on GVEA for power for 30 days

Facilities Services Utilities Division will be shutting down the turbines for cleaning from April 23 through May 23, 2009.

During those 30 days the campus will be relying solely on GVEA for power. Because of the significantly higher cost of this electricity Chancellor Rogers asks the campus community to reduce electrical use in an effort to save money.

In the unexpected event of a GVEA power outage, it will take utilities approximately 7-10 minutes before the large diesel turbine will begin powering up the campus. Campus power will come back on one feeder at a time. It will take several minutes between feeders to come online. The feeders are re-energized according to a priority list.

Please be advised that if there is no power, there will also be no drinking water, no reverse osmosis water and no compressed air.
