Supreme Court ruling in Janus case removes agency fee requirement

The Supreme Court ruled Wednesday, June 27, 2018, in Janus vs. AFSCME, that public employees cannot be required to pay union fees if they choose to not be in the union. Before the decision, agency fees were deducted from nonmember paychecks for union administrative costs such as contract negotiation. As always, the University will continue to work with union partners.

Effective immediately:

  • University bargaining unit members are no longer required to either join a union or pay agency fees.
  • The University will no longer require or deduct agency fees. Additionally, agency fees not already transmitted to the union will be refunded, as appropriate.
  • The University will continue to deduct union membership dues unless an employee revokes his/her payroll deduction using a revocation form.
