The offices of Statewide Emergency Management, Project Management and Public Affairs, in coordination with UAF Police Department and University Relations, will be conducting an active shooter exercise in the Butrovich building on December 8. This is designed to be a short, semi-realistic, small-scale exercise that will be reproducible in buildings across the UA system. A similar event will be scheduled for the Bragraw building during the spring semester.

In November Butrovich building occupants will begin to see updated safety signage, regular safety minutes and invitations to participate in safety trainings. Do you print from a Mac? Are you ready to print from a Mac to one of the five Konica Minolta Copy Pool printers in Butrovich?

Now you can use Casper Mac management to simplify the process of adding printers for your Mac.

This process is available on any Mac running OS X 10.9 (Mavericks) or 10.10 (Yosemite) that is enrolled in Casper. �

To add printers:

• Open the OIT Self Service app and sign in - the easiest way is often to use the spotlight search. �If you don't have the app you aren't enrolled in Casper.
• Click the "Printers" category from the list on the right hand side
• Click "Install" on the printer you wish to install and then click "install" again to kick off the process

The process works seamlessly on domain joined Mac's using UA username and password for authentication. �If you aren't on the domain you will be prompted for username and password before printing.�

The Challenge STARTED Oct. 25, but enrollment is still available up until Dec. 31. Once the Challenge starts you will be able to view your progress to the goal. If you currently have a fitness device or app connected to your Healthyroads account, that activity data will automatically pull-over and be applied towards the Challenge. You must be enrolled in either the ‘device/duration’ or ‘device/steps’ for this to occur.

If you have entered the ‘manual/step’ Challenge, starting Oct. 25 you will be able to manually enter your progress and also see your progress to the goal. Also, if you are enrolled in multiple ‘Walk Alaska’ Challenges, starting Sunday you will see a ‘withdraw’ option that will enable you to drop enrollment so that you are only enrolled in one of the options.

The University of Alaska is celebrating UA College Application Week Nov. 16-20, 2015 and is encouraging high school seniors to apply to college early. College Application Week is a national effort and, in Alaska, contributes to increased applications to UA. In fact, applications to UA are up 4 percent over last year.

“College is a game changer, leading to better careers and higher paying jobs. Alaska data shows that 63 percent of Alaska jobs will require a postsecondary education by 2018,” said Saichi Oba, associate vice president for student and enrollment services. “Applying early is not only a good first step, but it actually increases a student’s chance of success in college. Students that apply early have more time to apply for financial aid, make important decisions regarding classes and majors, and learn about campus life.”

High school seniors are encouraged to apply to the University of Alaska through http://uaonline.alaska.edu.

Oba said the Alaska Performance Scholarship and UA Scholars awards also are important for student success - both can help a lot to pay costs of college, paving the way to college degrees. Another step is to file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), which can unlock money to pay college costs. FAFSA funds often are grant-based and that means they do not have to be repaid.

Thanksgiving potluck
The Butrovich Thanksgiving potluck is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 20 from 12 – 2 p.m. in Butrovich 109. Please join President Johnsen, SAA and your fellow staff as we celebrate the holiday with good food and great company. President Johnsen will be providing turkey and ham.

A family holiday get together will be held in December (date to be determined) from 4-6pm at the University House on Gold Dust road. Shuttle buses will run to and from the Butrovich building as parking is limited. More information to follow at a later date.

Food Drive
We'd also like to remind everyone that the annual food drive will begin November 20 and run until the December potluck. Please bring in unopened, non-perishable food items and place them in the wrapped boxes located by Erector Bear and the Arctic Floats on the east and west ends of the Butrovich Building's first floor. As you check your pantry and cabinets for good food donations keep an eye open for any spare mugs for the mug drive, too. Bring them to Lisa Sporeleder's cubicle in Suite 102, by the windows, behind the purple vine. Lisa and her elves will stuff the mugs with a packet of gourmet cocoa and a candy cane, fill them with wrapped chocolates, and then give them a festive wrapping and a bow. The mugs go to the Food Bank along with the rest of the food we collect.

Adopt a Family
SAA has requested to adopt a family and a group home this year. If we all pull together we can help these families have a wonderful Christmas. Once we receive our families wish lists, gift ornaments with the individual family member’s needs will be hang on the Christmas tree on the 1st floor of Butrovich. Please stop by and pick a gift ornament you would like to provide. Gifts and/or gift cards may be bought to Alesia or Buffy in suit 206. All employees that work in the Butrovich building must take the Butrovich Emergency Action Plan training. The plan has been updated during the latest review cycle. OSHA requires all employees to be trained/re-trained on their Emergency Action Plan when the plan is developed, upon the employee's initial assignment to the job, when the employee's responsibilities under the plan change, or when there are changes to the plan. It is the law.

This training is scheduled to be provided in person 2-3 p.m. on Friday, Oct.30,�in the Board of Regent's Room 109 A/B.

Angus Gavin Migratory Bird Research Grant�
The University of Alaska Foundation is pleased to announce the availability of the 2016 Angus Gavin Memorial Bird Research Grant. Proposals for the grant will be accepted from scientists within the University system, which includes graduate students and faculty members employed within the University system. Grants are intended to be used for the support of research on bird species found either permanently or seasonally in Alaska or its coastal waters, including their biology, general ecology and habitat relationships. Whether you want to capture Halloween costume cheer, or need a new headshot for professional purposes, a photo booth will be set up in the foyer of 109 on Friday afternoon, Oct. 30 between 11:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. All portraits are free of charge and will be delivered digitally in the following week. It's first come, first serve, but feel welcome to come down, bring treats, and hang around to socialize with co-workers and see others' holiday outfits. It'll be a scream!
