Walker Wheeler Returns to OIT

Walker Wheeler will return to the OIT department as infrastructure service specialist/analysis/programmer, mainly working with OIT Core Apps. Wheeler will be working to help support the Google Apps deployment, Blackboard and other systems maintained and managed by OIT Core Apps. OIT Core Applications is responsible for the Google Applications for Higher Education. This suite of productivity and collaboration tools include email, calendar, document management and a few other advanced features. Wheeler joins the department on April 8.�

For the past five years, Wheeler worked as the IT manager for the UAF Rasmuson Library. Prior to his work at the library, he spent his time in Core Apps doing the same job he has been rehired to do. “I am alum so to speak,” Wheeler said.�

Wheeler has lived in Alaska for the majority of his life. Much of his formal education came from UAF where he received a bachelor’s and master’s degree in computer science. Currently, Wheeler is in the UAF MBA program to further his education and follow a career path back into management.�

Wheeler holds the following degrees and certificates: bachelor’s and master’s degrees in computer science, current Cisco Certification Network Associate, Microsoft Certified IT professional in enterprise administrator on Windows Server 2008 and server administrator on Windows Server 2008.

Family keeps Wheeler busy outside of work. He is married with four children. In his free time, he enjoys working on web development and tinkering with HTML5, CSS3 and Javascript. He has been teaching at UAF for the past seven years and when he can spare a minute, he also enjoys video games.
