Payroll Processing for SW Employees Transfers from UAF HR to SWOHR
As you may have already heard, the Statewide Office of Human Resources will be processing payroll for all statewide employees effective R12—the pay period beging May 20, 2012. In conjunction with this change, and in preparation for the implementation of web time entry for exempt employees, it will no longer be required for exempt (salaried) employees to submit paper timesheets unless one of the following situations apply:
- You are taking leave (such as annual leave, sick leave, jury duty, worker’s comp, leave without pay, etc)
- You are funded by a sponsored award (grant or contract)
- Your labor is charged to a different fund or organization code than the default listed on your timesheet
- You are receiving additional pay items (such as annual leave cash-in)
Non-exempt (hourly) employees will continue to use the web time entry program to submit time worked.

Just a reminder that all timesheet approvers should add a proxy to their account. If you are not going to be able to approve electronic timesheets, please arrange with your proxy to take over the timesheet approval duties.

Safety and Pathways to Success Top Themes During Administrative Professionals Recognition Day
Administrative Professionals Recognition Day at UA events included sessions on personal safety by Police Chief Sean McGee, Career Development by Patty Picha, Wellness briefings by WIN Alaska’s Cindy Salmon, Business Applications to Improve Your Workflow by OIT Gary Bender and an overview of the International Association of Administrative Professionals Polar Chapter by Chapter President, Elizabeth Cogan. �
Also included during the day was a panel discussion by Julie Larweth, Sacha Layos and Dianne Milke. � Reference material and various website resources were provided in a handout to attendees. A couple of those websites are included here:

Interim Chief Human Resources Officer, Donald Smith provided closing comments and expressed appreciation to attendees for their dedication and work with the University. ��
Fred Smits 5K Run/Walk Raises Scholarship Funds
More than $1700 was raised for the Fred Smits MBA Scholarship on April 28, not including donations made online in advance, during the 5K memorial walk/run. Members of the Smits' family and more than 80 participants gathered at the Patty Center on a sunny, Saturday morning for the fun run around the UAF campus in honor of Fred Smits. Smits was a former OIT Director who passed away while on his regular Saturday morning 10K run on April 30, 2011.
Smits' family established a scholarship in his honor last year which is now only $5,000 away from being permanently endowed. Anyone interested in making a donation is encouraged to contact Tammy Tragis-McCook at the UAF School of Management, 474-7042.

Butrovich Gardeners Create Blog
There are big plans growing for the employee garden at the Butrovich building this summer. The garden is located on the cement terraces just across the parking lot at the front of the Butrovich building. A couple of years ago a few employees began planting some vegetables to share. It is now the third year of the gardens, and looking to be the best one yet!
Plans for the 2012 season actually began this past January with a small group of volunteers selecting the layout and seeds to plant. The seeds were ordered in January by UAF Facilities Services, and planted just a few weeks ago. They have now emerged into sprouting seedlings.
The garden beds are scheduled to be rototiled the week of May 14. Butrovich plants will be delivered around the annual UAF Planting Day June 6. Volunteers interested in helping set them into the beds should contact Jocelyn Martin (jsmartin@alaska.edu) for more information.
The Butrovich Gardens Blog (http://butrovichgardens.weebly.com/the-seed-read.html) has the planting diagrams, photos of the seedlings, commentary on the gardens and is a great place to ask questions and interact with other gardeners.
SAA Election Results
The new staff representatives to the Statewide Administration Assembly were selected via online voting concluded May 7. Congratulations go to Heather Arana, Jeff Holloway, Ivan Leibbrandt, Kathleen Miner and Dana Platta, our new SAA members serving a two-year term; and Michael Scott and Amy O'Sullivan, our new alternates serving a one-year term. Please join us in thanking them for their service to the university and fellow staff.
SAA Highlights
The Statewide Administration Assembly met May 9, 2012. All meetings are open to the public, and statewide workers are encouraged to contact their governance group to address workplace concerns, policies and other matters affecting statewide staff. The next meeting will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, June 9.
