June is National Safety Month

June is National Safety Month – The University of Alaska is a member of the National Safety Council. Visit their website for safety tips and resources for both home and work.

Spring is in the air. This is the perfect time to do some spring cleaning and looking around our workstations for hazards.

We are due for our annual fire marshal inspection, so let’s try to make this year a 0 violation inspection. Some of the items that were noted last year were easy to fix and can be easily addressed early if they are again present.

Things to look for in your areas:

  • Power strips not plugged into a receptacle (daisy chaining surge protectors)
  • Extension cords used as permanent wiring and/or damaged cords
  • Storage within 18 inches of the sprinklers (storage overhead)
  • Non UL listed and verified tip protection portable electric heaters used
  • Unauthorized coffee warmer/candle heater/cooking devices (coffee makers or warmers in personal offices or work stations)
  • Missing ceiling tiles
  • Blocked exits
  • Combustible materials in mechanical rooms
  • Improperly mounted fire extinguishers

If you see any of these things in your area, please take the time to correct them. Power strips with extra long cords can be purchased for a minimal cost. Any facility issues like missing tiles should be forwarded to Jennifer Young, so she is able to put in a work order request.

Thank you for your continued effort and support in making our workplace safe.
