Ethnomedicine

The Ethnomedicine program explores how traditional healing practices can be applied to contemporary life and medicine. The program uses comparative analysis of cultures to gain insights into cultural frameworks for sickness, disease, and death, as well as wellness, healing, and life. The program combines diverse fields such as medical anthropology, ethnobotany, neuroscience, and biology to understand social rituals of healing.

The Ethnomedicine program is funded by Alaska’s world-renowned tribal health consortium and national health science programs; it operates in partnership with the Alaska School of Medicine and the One Health program.
