Compliance Chat Series: AI Social Engineering

June 21, 2024

In the constantly changing landscape of cybersecurity, Artificial Intelligence (AI) wields power that is both awe-inspiring and deeply unsettling. AI is revolutionizing social engineering. Recent headlines from Forbes have likened generative AI to “social engineering on steroids,” a testament to the profound impact this technology is having on the field. With its ability to automate processes and employ stealthy techniques, AI has dramatically raised the stakes in the world of cybersecurity.

The days of clumsy, easily identifiable phishing emails are long gone. Today, AI-powered social engineering attacks are incredibly sophisticated, often indistinguishable from legitimate communications. This shift has ushered us into what feels like an alternative reality, where discerning the real from the fake has become increasingly challenging. The advent of AI in social engineering has transformed the landscape.

In this Compliance Chat video installment we explore social engineering using AI. Mary Gower, Senior Institutional Compliance Liaison, and Bill Anker, Executive Director of Strategic Programs at the University of Alaska System Office of Information Technology will talk about these risks and countermeasures, including that threat actors can now create flawless, convincing written messages, voice mimicking and phone-based attacks.
