All three universities receive Military Friendly School designations
March 18, 2022
Over the last week, all three universities have received honorable designations as
military friendly schools.
UAA has been recognized for the 14th consecutive year as a Military Friendly School,
earning silver status for the first time. UAA’s elevation from bronze status last
year is a reflection of its ongoing efforts to develop and maintain a culture of serving
those who serve. This culture centers on good policies and practices, meaningful investments
in benefits, and resources and services for military and veteran students.
UAA recently created a flat-rate tuition for students who are active duty, reserves or national guard members. Tuition is now capped at $250 per undergraduate credit hour, and most fees are waived, ensuring affordability for military students. This policy was introduced to bring UAA’s costs in line with tuition benefits offered by the military.
In the past couple of semesters, UAA has also renewed its relationship with Joint
Base Elmendorf Richardson (JBER), with a number of classes taught on base, and military
support offices available to provide information to service members and students.
UAF has been upgraded in its Military Friendly School designation to silver status from
last year’s bronze award. This upgrade in status recognizes UAF’s hard work to continue
providing the best services and environment for active military students and dependents
as well as veterans.
In 2018 UAF was designated a Purple Heart Campus, signifying the university’s recognition and honor of veterans who were wounded in combat and are now pursuing their higher education at UAF.
UAF offers discounted tuition for active-duty military members, military dependents and veterans.
UAF also benefits from its proximity to Fort Wainwright Army Base and Eielson Air
Force Base, with educational offices on both bases to assist in student training and
military support.
UAS was designated as 2022-2023 Military Friendly School gold Status. To receive the
gold distinction, selected schools are within 10% of 10th-ranked organizations.
Institutions earning the Military Friendly School designation are evaluated using both public data sources and responses from a proprietary survey.
Military Friendly Schools measure an institution’s ability to meet thresholds for Student Retention, Graduation, Job Placement, Loan Repayment, Persistence (Degree Advancement or Transfer) and Loan Default rates for all students and, specifically, for student veterans. To receive the gold distinction, selected schools are within 10% of 10th-ranked organizations.
Military Friendly Schools strive toward and succeed in the areas that matter most in helping veterans make the transition from the military to school and, ultimately, satisfying careers in the civilian world.
UAS also has an established partnership with the Coast Guard station in Juneau, offering a College Student Pre-commissioning Initiative (CSPI) Coast Guard Scholarship program for students who wish to receive coast guard training while attending school.
