Gordon Kruse receives distinguished scientist award
The North Pacific Fishery Management Council has awarded Gordon Kruse the first Terry Quinn II Distinguished Scientist Award. Kruse is a fisheries researcher and a University of Alaska Fairbanks professor emeritus of fisheries and ocean sciences.
Kruse received the award for his contributions to fisheries science and management in the North Pacific, his commitment to mentoring young fisheries professionals, and his contributions to the NPFMC Scientific Statistical Committee.
In his acceptance speech, Kruse said, “I am very humbled to receive this award that honors Terry. The council has been a huge part of my professional career and I always try to make a positive difference in fisheries management. This means the world to me.”
Terry Quinn II was a professor emeritus who worked at the Juneau campus of the College of Fisheries and Ocean Sciences. He was an active member of NPFMC from 1986 until his death in 2019. Quinn was an expert in population dynamics and groundfish stock assessments, and was dedicated to achieving sustainable fisheries management. Quinn mentored many students who have since found careers as scientists and fisheries managers.
