In Memory of Arliss Sturgulewski
April 8, 2022
Yesterday the University of Alaska Foundation lost one of its longest serving board members when Arliss Sturgulewski died in Anchorage at the age of 94. Arliss poured her time, talent and endless energy into many community and leadership roles, but had a particular affinity for higher education and its ability to help advance women and people of color in all areas of life.
Arliss joined the UA Foundation Board of Directors in 1983 and remained an active member up into her late 80s. She is one of only two members ever designated as emeritus. In 2002, she established The Sturgulewski Family Endowment to provide financial assistance for tuition and related educational expenses for students majoring in journalism, engineering, teacher education or nursing at the University of Alaska Anchorage. Her family endowment is a permanent legacy in support of future generations of Alaska students.
The Arliss Sturgulewski Papers reside in the Consortium Library, and provide insight into her time as a legislator, her work on behalf of the causes she was passionate about, and the early development of many important community institutions.
Arliss was a trailblazer, and the UA Foundation is forever thankful for her service. We send our condolences to her family and loved ones.
