Anchorage
In 1915, construction for the Alaska Railroad started. Ship Creek Landing in Anchorage
was selected as the headquarters. A “Tent City” was formed at the mouth of Ship Creek.
Anchorage was incorporated in November 23, 1920. Today, Anchorage is the largest city
in the State of Alaska with a population of over 270,000 and it continues to grow.
The University of Alaska Anchorage began as Anchorage Community College establishing
in 1954. The college became a four-year institution, changing its name in 1976. These
men and women contribute and help grow to what the University of Alaska Anchorage
is today.
