Alaska has a strong reputation for managing fisheries and aquaculture resources in sustainable ways. The state leads the world in self-sufficiency metrics, exports of wild-caught fish, and sustainable mariculture practice. But the region also faces the challenge of overfishing—a constant threat to the ecosystem. The Center for the Blue Ocean Economy has helped Alaska install an Arctic ecosystem assessment system, to source vital information about the dynamic interplay of fish, climate, acidity, economics, and energy costs. Working closely with the Regenerative Policy Institute, the Center helps to ensure that fisheries can scale without harming the environment.
