Kelly Thorngren is director of the UAA Budget Office, a position she has held since 2012. The Budget Office mission is to facilitate the University’s annual operating budget process and monitor budget status through the quarterly management report process.
Prior to this, Thorngren worked at the UAA Community and Technical College for fifteen years. As Fiscal Officer, she was fortunate to work with an engaged leadership team in creating reliable budget processes and a collaborative environment supportive of tough financial discussions and decisions.
Before coming to work at the University of Alaska Anchorage, Thorngren spent ten years in progressively responsible positions in bank branch administration. Banking in those days was an adventure. As Assistant Vice President of Branch Administration at Alaska Statebank, Thorngren filled in for branch managers in Sand Point and Unalaska, helped implement new products like ATMs and interest bearing checking accounts, and assisted with the closure of three branch offices.
In 1990 Marc Langland, founder and CEO of Northrim Bank, hired Thorngren as Bank Operations Vice President to set up the branch operations side of a new bank. Thorngren implemented operations systems and hired and trained the first tellers and customer support staff. As security officer, she trained staff on bank robbery procedures and wrote a disaster recovery plan. Northrim is now an established Alaskan bank with a stellar reputation for customer service.
Thorngren earned her bachelor’s degree in Economics from Southern Oregon University. She enjoys gardening and creating art at her home in Anchorage, Alaska with her husband Zane and two cats Tiger and Willow.
