Data Center Outage FAQs - May 11 and May 18, 2024
This planned shutdown will mean all UA enterprise data systems served out of the Butrovich Data Center will be offline and unavailable during the following time frames:
Saturday, May 11: All day, beginning at 12:00 AM until 11:59 PM.
Saturday, May 18: All day, beginning at 12:00 AM until 11:59 PM.
For Students, service impacts during the Saturday outages (May 11 and May 18) will be the following:

From May 11-18 to integrate a maintenance bypass switch for the Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) for the Butrovich Data Center (BDC). The switch will ensure seamless and continuous power supply to the BDC in the event of a UPS outage or during annual maintenance on the UPS. Planned maintenance power disruptions to the Butrovich Data Center will take place on May 11 and May 18. This is to ensure safety for the technicians doing the upgrade work.
During these planned maintenance shutdowns many UA data systems served out of the Butrovich Data Center will be unavailable.
The University of Alaska Fairbanks main campus, including the Butrovich Building and all UAF community campuses and outreach centers, will lose internet access during the planned maintenance shutdowns. System Office and UAF users will also lose access to VPN services and any shared file servers hosted in the Butrovich Data Center.
Systems and services not hosted in the Butrovich Data Center should be available, such as email, Internet services for UAA and UAS and their affiliated community campuses, etc..
To prepare for the power outages on Saturday, May 11 and Saturday, May 18, complete work or tasks in the impacted services before 5:00 PM on Friday, May 10 and Friday, May 17. Some examples of tasks to take care before the start of the outage:
- Plan for internet access other than the UAF network, such as your mobile phone’s hotspot.
- Reset your password if it has been over one year since your last password reset
University employees in the Butrovich Building should also power down their workstations and other electrical loads by 5:00 PM on Friday, May 10 and Friday, May 17.
