FY20 Operating Budget Impasse Employee Information

UA leadership is actively planning for university operations in the event the legislature does not pass an operating budget. Each of the university's leadership teams are analyzing potential impacts on university operations and discussing the possibility for furloughs and layoffs if there is no operating budget passed. Planning efforts include classifying functions critical to life and safety, mandated by law or function, necessary for continuation of mission or support of that mission or identifying operations that could be reduced or suspended under a possible budget impasse.

While many of the impacts are not yet known, the university will use its best efforts to maintain critical operations and services for our students and communities as well as the research and educational programs funded by external sponsors after July 1. If furloughs are used, employees will receive 30-day advance notice as written in Board of Regent policy.


  • June 15 - End of legislative special session
  • June 19 - Board of Regents special meeting to discuss the university's FY20 operating budget (If there is no budget by then the BOR will have to call an emergency meeting once the budget is passed in order to accept the budget and approve the distribution plan.)
  • June/July TBD - Chancellor Town Hall meetings
