Request for Proposals for Renovation of Facilities at Rural Campuses

Further funding for this opportunity are on hold until further notice. Previous awards included criteria below.

Renovation eligibility:  Rural Pipeline Partner Institutions only

The Biomedical Learning and Student Training (BLaST) program invites proposals for renovations to support student biomedical research training. Investigators and Administrators at all rural campuses of the University of Alaska Fairbanks, the University of Alaska Southeast, and Ilisagvik Tribal College are encouraged to submit proposals. Note: Investigators and Administrators at the Fairbanks campus of UAF are not eligible.

The overarching goal of BLaST is to enhance undergraduate training and mentoring in biomedical research through increased diversity of students, increased integration of research and teaching, and enhanced integration of rural campuses into a cohesive biomedical community in Alaska.

The full amount remaining (previously) for renovations is $300,000, which may be awarded to one or more institutions to enhance undergraduate student training opportunities. Projects with budgets under $200,000 are preferred. Larger projects will be considered with sufficient justification.

Funding priority will be assigned to renovations, locations, and investigators that will have the greatest impact in engaging students in biomedical/One Health research and in increasing student access to research opportunities. Based on these priorities, the following criteria will be part of the evaluation process:

  1. Significance, innovation and approach in the renovation project with regard to how it will foster undergraduate research opportunities;
  2. Capacity to enhance research opportunities for students, faculty and staff in the region.

If you have specific questions regarding submission or requirements please contact the BLaST Program Administrator, Adam Chisom,

Applications will be reviewed as they are received; thus, there are inherent advantages associated with early submissions. Previous proposals were received by February 29, 2016 and funds for alteration and renovation of research training space were obligated no later than May 31, 2016. The BLaST Steering Committee reviewed all renovation requests.
