An Alaska Legacy in the Making: Burke Riley and Dick Freer
Boyhood friends Dick and Burke dropped out of the University of Washington in 1938 and headed to Alaska in search of work. They booked one-way passage on the 117-foot trading boat “Discoverer,” and set off for Anchorage.

Matthieu's journey as a first generation U.S. citizen led him from his tropical home in Hawaii to University of Alaska Anchorage - a relocation that took some adjustment. Luckily, he was used to adapting to new cultures and climates, having traveled the world throughout his childhood.
