George J. Love was born on June 24, 1858 in Keokuk, Iowa, the son of Honorable James M. Love who is a State Supreme Court Justice and Chancellor of the Law Department at Iowa State University. George Love graduated from Iowa State University with his law degree in 1880.

After graduating, Love settled at Huron, South Dakota where he practiced law and was a postmaster. He came to Alaska, first settling at Nome in June 1900. He came to Valdez arriving on February 7, 1901.

During this time he formed a partnership with H.T. Whitley. Mr. Love and H.T. Whitley engaged in restaurant business, later engaged in the meat and produce business.

George Love was assistant auditor of the Valdez-Yukon Railroad Company, organized to build a line from Valdez to the Interior.

In 1914, Love was appointed U.S. Commissioner at Valdez. He served as U.S. Commissioner, Clerk of Court, Grand Secretary for the Grand Igloo of Pioneers, and for the many years edited the Pioneer Magazine. George Love became a member of the Board of Regents for the University of Alaska from 1928-1929. John Gilson was appointed to take his place on the board. In 1934, Mr. Love was appointed to the office of U.S. Land Registrar. Love died in Anchorage, Alaska, June 26, 1935.
